The AI economy is a system before it is a story.

Independent research on AI economics: the cost curves, bottlenecks, market structures, and institutions that determine how artificial intelligence is built, priced, deployed, and distributed.

A SYSTEMS THEORY FOR AI ECONOMICS

Every AI market is also a control problem.

V(R) ≥ V(D)
The variety of a regulator R must be at least as great as the variety of the disturbances D it is designed to control.

First stated by W. Ross Ashby in An Introduction to Cybernetics (1956), this theorem establishes a fundamental limit on control. It gives AI economics a discipline: no forecast of prices, productivity, or power is complete without a model of the constraints and institutions that shape them.

RESEARCH SCOPE

One field.
Eight lenses.

AI economics is not only about models or markets. It is the study of how capability meets scarce complements, institutions, and incentives — from energy and infrastructure to labor, governance, and democratic legitimacy.

AI ALIGNMENT

V(R) ≥ V(D)

Regulatory variety must match or exceed disturbance variety to maintain control.

CYBERSECURITY

H(X|Y) > 0

Residual entropy after observation bounds the attacker's advantage.

AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS

∂V/∂t = f(V,D)

Variety dynamics govern the stability of autonomous regulators.

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

R ⊇ D

The regulator's response set must contain every possible disturbance.

FINANCIAL SYSTEMS

σ(R) ≥ σ(D)

Regulatory bandwidth must exceed market volatility to prevent systemic failure.

HEALTHCARE

I(R;S) = H(S)

Complete information about the system is necessary for effective regulation.

GOVERNANCE INSTITUTIONS

C(R) ≥ C(D)

Institutional complexity must scale with the complexity of governed systems.

CLIMATE & EARTH

∇·J + ∂ρ/∂t = 0

Conservation laws constrain the variety of feasible regulatory interventions.

Compute 2030

TAI INAUGURAL REPORT SERIES

Four scenarios for the AI economy through 2030, tracing how compute, energy, capital, market structure, and public institutions can reshape growth, governance, and strategic balance.

"The question is not whether compute will reshape the world. The question is whether our regulatory institutions will have sufficient variety to absorb the disturbances it introduces."

SCENARIO 01

Concentrated Dominance

State-backed monopoly on frontier compute

SCENARIO 02

Multilateral Fragmentation

Competing national compute blocs

SCENARIO 03

Governed Transition

International coordination succeeds

SCENARIO 04

Diffuse Proliferation

Commoditized compute, distributed power

TAI WORKING PAPER SERIES · TAI-WP-2026-02

The AI economy by elimination. Thirty questions on compute, data, models, labor and the physical world, each forecast by testing every candidate answer against six constraints and keeping only what survives. Only one of the six is physical law. The other five reprice rather than forbid, which is why every verdict carries a probability instead of a proof.

"Superintelligence may or may not arrive on schedule; the electricity bill, the memory, and the trust will arrive regardless."

A published record, not just a forecast. One dated call with its adjudication rules specified. A pre-registered backtest with four hits and one maximum-confidence miss, kept on the register with its score. And a coined unit withdrawn when its numerator proved not to exist.

SIX CONSTRAINTS, ORDERED BY HOW FAST EACH RELAXES

01

Thermodynamics

never relaxes

Physical law. The only constraint that bars a candidate outright.

02

Talent and Absorption

10 to 40 years

Generational time. People raised, trained, and organised into working practice.

03

Data

not replenished

An accumulated stock, drawn down rather than produced.

04

Matter

2 to 7 years

Industrial production. Transformers, turbines, fabs, packaging, interconnection.

05

Law and Legitimacy

3 to 24 months

A collective decision by people with authority. Moves in both directions.

06

Capital

days to weeks

A price. The most mutable of the six, and therefore the one least able to bind.
